THINGS TO THINK ABOUT
Business regulations to consider
Apart from the regulations governing the operation of a food business, there are many other laws that may apply. A number of members may lease their property and therefore the Landlord & Tenant Act will give them certain rights about security of tenure. All businesses involved in the supply chain will need to be aware of the requirements of the Sale of Goods Act and there cannot be many businesses that escape having to comply with tax and VAT laws.

Health and Safety (Information for Employees) Regulations 1989
..... Where people are to be employed who are not husband, wife, parent, grandparent son, daughter, grandchild, brother, or sister of the employer, the employer must under Section 49 of the Offices, Shops and Railway Premises Act, 1963:
a)notify the appropriate authority of their intention by using form OSR1 obtainable from the Health & Safety Executive. One copy of this form will be passed to the Fire authorities, and

Employment of Young Persons
..... The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 require employer's to undertake a suitable and sufficient risk assessment of their business. Where the business employs 5 or more employees, the significant findings of the assessment should be recorded in writing, along with the details of any particular group of employees identified as being especially at risk. Any such assessment should take account of, amongst other things, the risk to both children and young persons due to their inexperience, lack of awareness and immaturity. More so, any such risk assessment should be carried out before the young person or child starts work.
For more advice as to what constitutes a young person (i.e. below 18 years of age) or child please contact the Federation.
Employers Liability Insurance
..... Where anyone is employed, display a certificate stating employer’s liability insurance has been taken out as required by law.
Lists
..... Where joints and cuts of meat on display are not marked individually with the price per kilo (unit price), a list of all such cuts or joints and the price per kilo must be displayed in a position from which it can be easily read by an intending purchaser.
Registration of Food Premises
..... Register the premises as a food business with the local authority by using the registration form obtainable from the local authority.
